'A Complete Unknown': A Colourful Biographical Depiction of Young Bob Dylan at the Outset of His Illustrious Career

A Complete Unknown (2024) is a colourful biographical drama starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan at the outset of his illustrious career. The film follows 19-year-old Dylan as he arrives in New York City in 1961 and becomes immersed in the Greenwich Village folk scene. After seeking out ailing folk legend Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), Dylan befriends Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), whose support helps establish him among the musicians and songwriters gathering throughout Lower Manhattan.
The storyline follows Dylan's rise as his songs attract growing attention and his reputation steadily builds. He becomes involved with Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning) while developing a complicated relationship with fellow musician Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro). As Dylan begins experimenting with an electric sound, his changing musical direction creates mounting friction within the folk community—culminating in his historic yet contentious appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, Ford v Ferrari) and adapted from Elijah Wald's book "Dylan Goes Electric!," A Complete Unknown is an evocative portrait of Bob Dylan during the formative years of his career. Chalamet expertly captures Dylan's peculiar cadence, aloofness and sly humor while performing his songs with remarkable conviction. Norton and Barbaro are equally strong, while Mangold keeps the music firmly at the center of a film that charts Dylan's emergence as one of America's most singular artists.
