Challengers (2024) is a provocative romantic sports drama starring Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy whose promising career is cut short by a devastating knee injury. Years later, Tashi has become coach and wife to professional player Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), whose once-formidable career has fallen into a dispiriting slump.

Hoping to restore Art's confidence, Tashi enters him into a low-level tournament in New Rochelle, New York, where he unexpectedly encounters Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor), his former best friend and longtime rival. The storyline moves between their present-day competition and events stretching back more than a decade, when Art and Patrick first met Tashi as teenage players and both became infatuated with her. Tashi's shifting relationships with the two men gradually complicate their friendship and professional ambitions, with long-held resentments resurfacing as Art and Patrick advance toward a climactic match against one another.

Directed by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All), Challengers is an exhilarating tale of romantic rivalry played out through the fiercely competitive world of professional tennis. Zendaya is terrific as the calculating and fiercely driven Tashi, while Faist and O'Connor bring considerable chemistry to a relationship defined as much by friendship as competition. Guadagnino imbues the film's matches with remarkable intensity, as the competition between Art and Patrick lays bare years of resentment and wounded pride.
