Quadrophenia (1979) is a visceral and indelible British drama starring Phil Daniels as Jimmy Cooper, a young working-class Mod living in London in 1964. Disillusioned with his parents and his dead-end job as a mail boy, Jimmy finds camaraderie and identity in the Mod lifestyle: scooters, fashionable clothing, amphetamines, and rock and roll music—particularly The Who.

Jimmy and his friends Dave (Mark Wingett) and Chalky (Philip Davis) spend their days riding their scooters and getting high, often clashing with rival Rocker gangs. Jimmy's life takes a turn when he begins dating Steph (Leslie Ash), a fellow Mod who shares his counterculture instincts. On a bank holiday weekend trip to Brighton—where Mods and Rockers clash violently on the beach—Jimmy is arrested and fined for public disturbance, further disappointing his parents. As his relationship with Steph begins to fray, Jimmy is left increasingly disillusioned as the ideals of the Mod lifestyle begin to unravel before him.

Based on the studio album by The Who and directed by Franc Roddam (The Lords of Discipline, The Bride), Quadrophenia is a gritty and absorbing exploration of the Mod subculture of 1960s London. Roddam perfectly captures the turbulence of youth, the allure of belonging and the often painful lessons of growing up. Highlighted by The Who’s evocative soundtrack, it’s a stylish and deeply resonant depiction of youthful exuberance and the search for identity amidst the dynamic social landscape of 1960s-era Britain.
