The Revenant (2015) is a stunningly immersive survival drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, a fur trapper navigating the unforgiving wilderness of the 1820s American frontier. While guiding a group of traders through perilous terrain, Glass is mauled by a bear and left gravely injured, setting into motion a brutal struggle for survival beset by both physical suffering and profound personal loss.
After fellow trapper John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) agrees to remain behind with Glass until he dies, the situation takes a treacherous turn when Fitzgerald abandons him in the wilderness after murdering his half-Pawnee son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck). Left for dead and barely able to move, Glass undertakes a staggering journey across the frozen terrain in order to seek vengeance against his son’s killer. The storyline details his battle against the elements of nature and hostile forces, as he pushes forward against seemingly insurmountable odds.
Directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Amores Perros, Birdman), The Revenant is a gripping tale of endurance and revenge. Iñárritu brings tremendous force to the material, using eye-opening natural settings and stark imagery to convey the sheer brutality of Glass’ ordeal. In his Academy Award-winning performance, DiCaprio is extraordinary in an incredibly demanding role, featuring sparse dialogue and a total physical commitment to Glass’s travails. Boosted immeasurably by Emmanuel Lubezki’s breathtaking cinematography, it serves as a harrowing depiction of human endurance stretched to its absolute limits.
