'The Warriors': A Vivid Urban Odyssey About a Street Gang Fighting Its Way Home Through Late-'70s New York City
The Warriors (1979) is a vividly stylized New York City action thriller focused on the titular street gang as they fight their way home to Coney Island after being falsely accused of murder. Their route brings them into violent confrontations with increasingly colorful adversaries, while volatile member Ajax (James Remar) repeatedly threatens the group's cohesion. Along the way, Swan forms an uneasy connection with Mercy (Deborah Van Valkenburgh), a young woman who joins their flight as the Warriors struggle to reach Coney Island before their pursuers close in.
Directed by Walter Hill (48 Hrs., Extreme Prejudice) and based on the novel by Sol Yurick (which was inspired by "Anabasis" by ancient Greek philosopher Xenophon), The Warriors is an immersive odyssey driven by visceral violence and a foreboding sense of menace. Hill transforms late-'70s New York into a sprawling battleground populated by sharply defined characters—parks, subway stations and deserted streets becoming stages in the Warriors' harrowing ordeal.
