About a Boy is an offbeat British comedy starring Hugh Grant as Will Freeman, a wealthy bachelor living in London. Carefree and self-absorbed, Will has never had to work thanks to royalties from a hit Christmas song his father wrote years earlier. His insulated lifestyle has left him ill-equipped for genuine relationships, however, preferring fleeting encounters over lasting connection.
Indulging in duplicity, Will invents a fictional child to attend single-parent support groups as a way to meet women. Through this deception he meets Marcus (Nicholas Hoult), a socially awkward 12-year-old boy whose mother, Fiona (Toni Collette), is struggling with depression. As Will becomes increasingly involved in Marcus’s life, an unexpected friendship develops between them—challenging Will’s commitment to his detached, responsibility-free lifestyle. Over time, their bond begins to reshape both of their outlooks, forcing them to confront the limitations of the lives they’ve been living.
Based on the 1998 novel by Nick Hornby and directed by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, "About a Boy" blends sharp humor and emotional depth, employing alternating voiceovers from Will and Marcus to explore their loneliness and personal growth. The shifting perspectives reveal how each initially misunderstands the other before a genuine connection develops. They also highlight how change unfolds on both sides, with each character influencing the other in unexpected ways that gradually alter how they see themselves and the world around them.
