Movie poster for Heathers (1988)

Heathers (1988) is a darkly entertaining black comedy set within the toxic social hierarchy of an affluent Ohio high school. The film stars Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer, an intelligent but conflicted teenager who enjoys newfound popularity after falling in with the school’s ruling trio of wealthy and manipulative girls, all named Heather. Though Veronica initially embraces the social privileges afforded by her elevated status, she gradually becomes disillusioned by the cruelty and humiliation inflicted by her peers.

After entering into a volatile relationship with rebellious outsider Jason “J.D.” Dean (Christian Slater), Veronica soon finds herself drawn into an escalating chain of deadly incidents that throw the entire student body into chaos. As faculty members, classmates and grieving parents struggle to make sense of the tragedies unfolding around them, Veronica becomes increasingly horrified by J.D.’s nihilistic worldview and erratic behavior. The storyline follows her attempts to regain control of a rapidly deteriorating situation as paranoia and hysteria begin to consume the entire community.

Directed by American filmmaker Michael Lehmann (Hudson Hawk, The Truth About Cats & Dogs), Heathers is a wickedly sharp depiction of adolescent alienation, social cruelty and self-destruction. Lehmann balances jet-black humor with genuine unease, while Ryder and Slater play off one another brilliantly throughout. Ahead of its time in both tone and subject matter, the film remains a fiercely original portrait of teenage disaffection simmering beneath the veneer of suburban normalcy.
