Movie poster for 'Singles' (1992)

Singles (1992) is a keenly observed romantic comedy-drama set within Seattle’s early-90s grunge scene, starring Bridget Fonda as Janet, a waitress entangled in an uneven relationship with aspiring rock musician Cliff (Matt Dillon). Residing in a modest apartment complex alongside a disparate group of young adults, Janet remains deeply invested in Cliff despite his vanity and emotional detachment—holding out hope that his affection will eventually match her own.

In a separate storyline, transportation planner Steve (Campbell Scott) finds himself drawn to environmental activist Linda (Kyra Sedgwick), whose guarded disposition stems from a failed prior relationship. As Steve works to win Linda over and Janet reckons with the limitations of her relationship with Cliff, Debbie (Sheila Kelley) navigates a string of dispiriting encounters in search of her ideal partner. The narrative follows these overlapping lives as they move through romance, disappointment and shades of self-awareness, bonded by proximity and youthful uncertainty.

Directed by American filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous), Singles is an resonant portrait of young adulthood shaped by romantic misalignment and shifting expectations. Crowe captures the rhythms of daily life with a deft hand, allowing each storyline to develop with clarity while drawing natural performances from his full ensemble. It's a vivid depiction of emotional trial and error, at a time in life when connection feels both urgent and out of reach—all while presciently capturing Seattle’s grunge-era emergence.
