Movie poster for The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix (1999) is a groundbreaking science fiction action film starring Keanu Reeves as Thomas Anderson, a computer hacker known as "Neo", who discovers that the world he knows is, in fact, a simulated reality called "the Matrix".

Neo is initially presented as a mild-mannered office drone who whiles away his evenings in cyberspace, before he is approached surreptitiously by resistance member Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) with the promise of great enlightenment. Brought to meet rebel leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Neo is given the opportunity to face the truth—that their entire reality has been created by intelligent machines to subdue humanity while their bodies are used for energy. Morpheus believes Neo is "The One", a prophesied figure who can manipulate the Matrix and liberate human-kind, and recruits him to join their war against the forces of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), a sentient program designed to keep order within the system at all costs.

Written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski (Bound, Cloud Atlas), The Matrix is a full-throttle tale of explosive adventurism and eye-opening visual spectacle. The Wachowskis explore philosophical themes such as reality-versus-illusion and free-will-versus-control through the prism of grand, operatic pageantry, keenly balancing extraordinary set pieces with an undercurrent of intellectualism. With influences ranging from Frank Herbert to William Gibson, the Wachowskis successfully amalgamate a host of literary and philosophical sources to create a pitch-perfect pastiche of cyberpunk dystopia, mythic heroism and postmodern existentialism.
