Thief (1981) is a sleek and engrossing American crime drama starring James Caan as Frank, a veteran safecracker and ex-con forging a lucrative living in Chicago. Having spent years in prison, Frank is determined to build a stable life of his own, yearning for a wife, child and legitimate future beyond the criminal world.
After beginning a relationship with Jessie (Tuesday Weld), Frank becomes increasingly intent upon turning his long-deferred ambitions into reality. An apparent solution arrives in the form of mob figure Leo (Robert Prosky), who offers to finance Frank’s plans in exchange for his expertise. What initially seems like a path toward freedom soon devolves into a trap, as Frank finds himself ensnared in a tightening web of coercion and criminal obligation.
Directed by Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider), Thief is a riveting crime drama about self-determination and violent reprisal. Mann brings tremendous style and atmosphere to the material, rendering nocturnal Chicago in cool blues and metallic glare while sustaining a powerful sense of tension throughout. Caan is superb in one of his finest performances, helping deliver a gripping portrait of criminal ambition pushed toward extremity and ruination.
